Global solutions for railway operators
KTR has been designing, building, deploying and supporting end-to-end RDN (Railway Dedicated Network) solutions based on the GSM-R standard for more than 20 years. Secure, scalable and smart infrastructure provided by Kontron Transportation connects more than 90,000 kilometers of railway track in Europe, Africa and Asia.
Some of the largest IP-ready railway communications networks in the world, based on GSM-R standard, including the networks of Austrian Railways (ÖBB), Deutsche Bahn, Network Rail, SNCF Réseau/Synerail and important lines in China, Algeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and many others are powered KTR.
KTR has actively contributed towards creating new standards in train radio technology and is the perfect partner for railway operators preparing the shift from GSM-R to a next generation standard of radio infrastructure (FRMCS).
Driver of the next generation in future railway mobile communication
Having pioneered the introduction of IP in Railway networks, Kontron Transportation is the perfect partner for railway operators in preparing for the shift from GSM-R to a future wireless standard of radio infrastructure. The FRMCS vision is to cover mission-critical railway communications by enabling an on-board mobile communication system for railway operators. With the recently developed PS-LTE (Public Safety Long Term Evolution) solution, KTR has added IoT (Internet of Things), VNF (Virtualized Network Function) and Asset Management to its portfolio.

Kontron Transportation invests in R&D. At its R&D centers in Europe, KTR develops next generation systems, applications and services as well as solutions for operational and business support systems. KTR plays an active role in various standardization and regulatory bodies such as the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the ERA (European Railway Agency), the International Union of Railways (UIC), and joined the European Rail Industry Association (UNIFE).
KTR also has a driving role in the European rail joint technology initiative Shift2Rail, which aims to drive innovation to the rail sector.
